How Long Do Propane Tanks Last? Image

Whether you’ve been a longtime propane user or are just starting out, knowing the lifespan of your propane tank can help you make smart decisions for your Central New York home. There are many different sizes of propane tanks, and some last longer than others, but what about yours? Keep reading this blog from Wendt’s Propane to learn about the different lifespans of propane tanks and when you should replace yours.

Common Lifespans of Propane Tanks

Portable Propane Tank Lifespans

Portable propane tanks commonly include small tanks, like 20 lb. grill tanks. The typical lifespan of a portable propane tank in the US is 12 years from the date of manufacture. After 12 years, the tank must be recertified for continued use or replaced. To find the manufacture date on your tank, check the stamped date on the collar of the tank. It will be written as month and year, e.g., “03 17” for March 2017. Understanding and checking the stamp date helps you know your propane tank’s expiration and when to have it recertified or replaced.

Above Ground Residential Propane Tank Lifespans

Above ground residential propane tanks typically include large tanks used to hold enough fuel to power heating and other various appliances. These tanks range in size from 100 to 1,000 gallons. The lifespan of these tanks can be 30 years or more with proper maintenance. Residential above ground propane tanks should be inspected annually by a professional. Additionally, homeowners should conduct visual inspections a few times a year for signs of wear, leaks, or damage. These tanks need to be recertified 12 years after the date of manufacture and then every 5 years after that.

Underground Propane Tank Lifespans

Underground propane tanks are buried beneath the surface of the ground, with only a small dome or access point visible above ground. The lifespan for an underground propane tank is about 20-30 years. To ensure longevity, corrosion protection is essential, and many need regular propane tank inspection as well as testing every 3–5 years.

Propane Tank Maintenance Tips

To take advantage of the maximum lifespan of your propane tank, there are several things you can do to keep your tank in good condition:

  • Keep portable tanks upright and stored outside in the shade
  • Schedule regular professional inspections for larger tanks
  • Protect underground tanks from water pooling
